Image of Epizone

EPIZONE is an international scientific network of 18 institutions working on transboundary and arthropod-borne diseases such as foot and mouth disease, avian influenza, classical swine fever, West Nile fever and bluetongue. Over 25 scientists at VLA are involved in the project.

The network plays a key role in research on the prevention, detection and control of these diseases by:

  • Sharing access to resources such as clinical materials and strains, high-containment facilities and specialist equipment.
  • Providing training opportunties for the scientists.
  • Creating expert teams for acute needs.
  • Setting up links with other groups and networks outside the EU.
  • Improving and standardising diagnostic methods and vaccines.
  • Developing new methods of surveillance, epidemiology and risk analysis.

Its members now include over 300 scientists from Europe, China and Turkey.
