Risk analysis

VLA is at the forefront of national and international developments in risk analysis

VLA scientists carry out projects on a wide range of animal and public health areas and have the capability and experience in a variety of risk assessment methodologies. They also have an in-depth knowledge of animal and zoonotic diseases, including emerging animal diseases and access to international expertise on a range of specialist areas.

Four stages of risk assessment

Four stages of Risk Assessment

Examples of recent work include:

  • Assessing the risks associated with the importation of animals and their products (e.g. brucellosis, bovine tuberculosis, illegal meat, blue tongue and rabies)
  • Assessing public health risks from consumption of animal food products (e.g. campylobacter, salmonella, antibiotic resistant organisms, Escherichia coli O157 cryptosporidium).
  • Assessing the risk of disease transmission (e.g. bovine tuberculosis, brucellosis, foot and mouth disease).
  • Assessing animal and public health risks associated  with transmissible spongiform encephalopthies.

Our Scientists teach the Risk Analysis module on the Royal Veterinary College, The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the VLA MSc Veterinary Epidemiology courses. Short courses in risk analysis at national and international locations are also available.
