Disinfectants for Animal Disease Prevention and Control
Veterinary disinfectants are a vital component of animal disease control strategies, both in the everyday prevention of disease and in controlling disease spread during epidemic outbreaks.
The Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA), on behalf of Defra, administers a mechanism for the approval of veterinary disinfectants for the purposes of animal disease prevention and control arising under UK Statutory Instrument ‘The Diseases of Animals (Approved Disinfectants) (England) Order 2007’ which gives effect to requirements in certain European Union disease control directives that only approved disinfectants should be used in the control of outbreaks of those notifiable diseases. These are:
- The Diseases of Poultry (England) Order 2003; In Scotland and in Wales and The Avian Influenza and Influenza of Avian Origin in Mammals (England) (No 2) Order 2006; In Scotland and in Wales
- The Tuberculosis (England) Order 2006; In Scotland and in Wales
- General Orders (for use where animal disease control legislation (other than the 4 specific diseases above) made under the Animal Health Act or the European Communities Act requires the use of an approved disinfectant

Under the Defra approval mechanism, a manufacturer of a product that complies with the Biocidal Products Directive may submit their product for testing at the AHVLA. If it can be demonstrated that the product is efficacious, it can be placed on the list of Defra approved disinfectants for use in England, Scotland and Wales. The list is live on the Defra website.
Products are listed in alphabetical order and the list is defaulted to open at letter ‘A’. Products listed show the approved Order and dilution rate for use, alongside the name and address of the manufacturer or distributor. The list viewed can be customised by ticking/unticking the boxes to ‘show list for’ specific Orders. The list can be downloaded to either Microsoft Word or Excel, but lists retained in this way should not be used for reference beyond the date and time of downloading as the list operates in real-time and changes can be made at any time by administrators. If a link is placed in a home screen or desktop ‘favourites’ list, please click ‘refresh’ each time it is opened to ensure current approvals only are viewed.
