Anthrax is an acute and generally fatal disease caused by the bacteria, Bacillus anthracis. Herbivores are the most susceptible animals to infection with cattle the most frequently affected in Great Britain.
Anthrax organisms, shed from dead animals, can convert into highly resistant spores which can survive in the environment for many years. Carnivores and man can be infected by contact with carcasses or products of infected animals such as wool, hair and hides.
VLA provides surveillance services, and biological products which may be used in times of disease outbreak.
Anthrax is a notifiable disease and therefore you must contact your local
Animal Health Office if you suspect signs of this disease.
