Pre-ISVEE surveillance workshop

Discussing the development and application of methods for effective surveillance in livestock populations

6-8 August 2009, Durban, South Africa

The workshop was sponsored by Defra as part of the implementation of Strategic Goal 3 of the UK Veterinary Surveillance Strategy, which seeks to derive better value from surveillance information and activities.

The main objectives were to:

  • Discuss the development and application of surveillance approaches for a range of different surveillance objectives.
  • Investigate the constraints that limit the use of effective surveillance methods in different situations.

Report

The report (590kb pdf) from this workshop is now available.

A shorter summary (90kb pdf) document is also available including:

  • The executive summary.
  • Proposed definitions and description criteria (appendix 2b).
  • An action list for progressing the implementation of effective surveillance (appendix 7).

The key outcomes of the workshop were to:

  • Initiate the development of a standardised system for describing surveillance activities (appendix 2b of report).
  • Explore the selection of appropriate surveillance methods for different objectives.
  • Develop ideas about how the efficiency of surveillance methods might be enhanced.
  • Identify means to encourage the implementation of appropriate and efficient surveillance methods and develop an action list facilitate this (appendix 7 of report).
  • Clarify the importance of communication between scientists and data providers in order to build trust and encourage participation in surveillance systems.
  • Identify the need for enhancing communication and co-operation within the scientific community and initiate the development of plans for an international surveillance conference (see the Animal Health Surveillance website).
