Career Profiles

Elizabeth, Research Division

"I joined the VLA as a Biology graduate and worked in the lab as an assistant scientist which was a steep, but fun learning curve since I had little molecular experience when I started!

After about six months I was given the opportunity to enrol on a part-time MSc course; a PhD and several promotions have followed since.

VLA have provided me with an interesting and varied job, some significant challenges, some really good training opportunities and an environment where I have been well supported to develop my career.

For me, a real benefit of working at VLA is the other members of staff as there are always people willing to help you out, to support and inspire. VLA's a good team to be part of and I look forward to seeing what the next few years bring...."

"It sounds a little odd saying it in today's world, but i really can see myself staying at VLA until I retire. I'm so excited about working here as when I first joined, even though my career has developed and changed so much since then. From full-time, to part-time and back again, a complete change in roles, and a five-year career break - I've had support every step of the way.

When I was at school I dreamed of being a vet, so I wanted my love of animals to be at the heart of my career. That is why I originally joined VLA in a scientific role. But, after having a career break to look after my two young children (and having time to reflect) I was given the chance to switch disciplines and gain training and qualifications in my new administrative role.

They say that it is opportunities that make a career. Sometimes it is the opportunities you don't immediately think about that mean the most."
